Sweden's regional competence hubs

A blog series on Sweden’s competence hubs

Mapping and creating an overview on main regional competence hubs in Sweden: Building from the ground up with several regional hubs connecting key strengths while aligning under Sweden's national framework. Competence hubs are regional ecosystems that act as innovation nodes, industrial clusters, and collaborative platforms all at once.

About this article series:

Once all articles on the main competence hubs are published we will link to them from various locations as a resource. Hubs are encouraged to keep their information up to date with support from Semicon Sweden.

Powering the future: Regional semiconductor strenghts with national impact

Sweden’s semiconductor ecosystem is growing organically through collaboration. Each Competence Hub plays a vital role in this landscape — connecting local expertise, research, and industry to create a stronger, more cohesive national ecosystem with shared access to infrastructure, talent, and global networks.

Why competence hubs?

Strong local ecosystems are essential for national impact. Each region in Sweden brings something unique – world-class universities, deeptech startups, key industrial players, or domain-specific expertise. By recognizing and supporting these regional strengths, we ensure that the national strategy is grounded in what already works – and is ready to scale. These hubs are more than locations. They are:

  • Launchpads for R&D and innovation
  • Connectors between academia, startups, and industry
  • Gateways to European initiatives and funding
  • Amplifiers of local strengths with global relevance

The main semiconductor competence hub in Sweden

Each article in this series will dive into a specific region, cover the key competences and focus areas, actors and initatives. Including contribution to the national and european ecosystem, outlook and future opportunities. Regions to be presented in this series:

  • Östergötland – Linköping/Norrköping
  • Kista-Stockholm
  • Göteborg
  • Halmstad
  • Uppsala
  • Skåne – Lund/Malmö

Each hub also interacts with national or broader initiatives such as the Swedish Chips Competence Centre (SCCC), Semicon Sweden, Myfab, and EU-level programs. Whether you’re a policymaker, investor, startup founder, or researcher, this series offers a guided tour of the people, ideas, and ecosystems shaping Sweden’s role in the semiconductor revolution.
